About Dunedin

Dunedin – Otepoti in Maori – is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the principal city of the Otago Region. It is considered to be one of the four main urban centres of New Zealand for historic, cultural, and geographic reasons.

The Dunedin urban area lies on the central-eastern coast of Otago, surrounding the head of Otago Harbour. The harbour and hills around Dunedin are the remnants of an extinct volcano. The city suburbs extend out into the surrounding valleys and hills, onto the isthmus of the Otago Peninsula, and along the shores of the Otago Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. It’s an easy city to navigate and there are a few camping spots in the city centre. Find out more about responsible camping in Dunedin here.

Dunedin’s attractions include New Zealand’s only castle, Larnach Castle, an old Edwardian home at Olveston Family Home and Otago Museum, one of New Zealand’s oldest. If you love your wildlife, don’t miss out on a kiwi spotting tour at Orokonui Ecosanctuary or visit the penguin colony on the Otago Peninsula.

Surprising to some, Dunedin has some spectacular beaches with good surf north and south and a range of safe swimming beaches. Head to St Clair beach and Salt Water Pool and gaze towards the Antarctic or if you want to feel alone at the end of New Zealand, take in Tunnel Beach.
