Christchurch - the international gateway to the South Island of New Zealand and for many the starting point for a trip of a lifetime. Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand, and the country's second-largest urban area.
Many travellers will only spend a night or two in Christchurch, eager to explore the rest of the South Island but there is so much on offer in the city, it’s worth the extra time if you have it. Ride the gondola, hike, mountain bike, dolphin watch, play golf, dine out or simply soak up the scenery – there’s no time to be bored in Christchurch! The city is still in the process of being rebuilt after the devastating 2011 earthquake but what is springing in its wake is budding with creativity and community. Check out the brightly coloured Re:START, an outdoor retail and café centre, or stop by the International Arctic Centre – a JUCY favourite.
Heading north, the coastal town of Kaikoura is not to be missed! Go whale watching by boat or by air, take a swim with either dolphins or seals (or both) or hike the rugged mountains that overlook this New Zealand gem.
Further north, the Marlborough region caters to wine lovers, photographers, hikers and sailors alike. Prepare to be blown away by the beauty of the region as you hike the 72km Queen Charlotte Track or if you prefer something more chilled, park your wheels at a nearby campground close a Blenheim winery and learn about the flavourful vintages that make this region famous around the world.
Heading south, take in Mt Cook, famed as Sir Edmund Hillary’s training ground, en-route to Queenstown - the adventure capital of New Zealand and a highlight on many an itinerary.
The South Island is amazing – so embrace it, try new things and take a JUCY road trip you’ll always remember!
